Exceptional Demand for Belfast Groundwater Sampling Training

We were delighted at the level of interest shown when running the groundwater sampling training course in Belfast on 13th & 14th December 2011.

This course attracted more delegates than to any of our previous courses leading us to run the course on two separate days in order to meet demand! We were fortunate in attracting deegates from a wide range of sectors including environmental consultants, regulators, universities, local authorities and water companies.

Delegates gained the latest insights into groundwater sampling methods and a better understanding of regulatory guidance. The content must have been good because we received an aggregate score of 1.2 on the Geological Society CPD assessment scale where 1 is excellent and 5 is very poor. Thank you to those who were there!

The session was lead by Hydrogeologist, Peter Dumble, Waterra In-Situ’s Technical Director, who is the principal author of the current Environment Agency and SEPA guidance for monitoring leachate, groundwater and surface water at landfill sites. Peter was full of praise for the course audience:

Pneumatic Slug Testing: An New Approach for Hydraulic Conductivity Monitoring?

Conventional slug testing offers some major advantages over pump tests in site investigations but there are some issues associated with projecting slug test permability values to larger aquifer volumes. Could pneumatic slug testing provide an alternative?

Slug testing using a known volume of water or an item that displaces a measured volume has become a standard tool in the hydrogeologist's or engineer's kit bag in recent years. The approach offers a number of advantages over standard pump-based tests because it is easy to implement in the field, offers large cost savings, and it will work in low flow environments.

Conventional slug testing has improved our ability to determine hydraulic conductivity, and consequently made a major positive difference to site characterisation across a range of applications. However there are some drawbacks, particularly related to the need for the insertion of a water sample or a solid slug. For instance;

The pressure wave caused by insertion may impact data accuracy.

Slugs may not manoeuvre around well or borehole casings

It may be difficult to deploy a slug large enough to create sufficient displacement for measurement.

Pneumatic slug testing offers an interesting new option to overcome these issues because, as the name suggests, no physical slug is used. Instead the well or borehole is sealed and air is used to pressurise the water column. When equilibrium is reached between the pressure in the water head and the well then de-pressurisation takes place and a data logger can measure the resulting changes in water level.

Apart from removing or reducing the problems associated with physical slug insertion, pneumatic slug testing also provides near instantaneous slugging events, which is very important in achieving the best possible accuracy.

Waterra In-Situ Technical Director, Peter Dumble, believes that pneumatic slug testing will in time become a preferred mechanism for monitoring hydraulic conductivity in monitoring wells and boreholes.

"This method of hydraulic conductivity testing has some clear advantages over both pump testing and conventional physical testing. In the short term I can see some important niche applications for the approach and over time we are likely to see it become the method of choice in the industry"

Monitoring water and DNAPL levels in real-time

Monitoring DNAPL levels in real-time has always been a challenge. Now with the help of the In-Situ Level TROLL® 500 instrument there is an effective way of keeping track.

DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquid) contaminants have the unpleasant property of sinking below the water table and creating the potential for long term environmental problems.The difficulty for organisations who are engaged in the monitoring or remediation of brown field sites is that DNAPL materials such as chlorinated solvents, creosote or oils are simultaneously very common but have a slow migration profile. As such the impact on aquifers may take some time to show through.

The Level TROLL® 500 instrument provides an accurate method of providing data on the thickness of DNAPL levels in real-time and, if required, over the long term. The installation requires two devices; one for the DNAPL layer and the second in the water column. This allows the thickness of the DNAPL layer to be calculated by comparing the difference in density between the two liquids.

Successful Groundwater Sampling Training

Waterra's most recent groundwater sampling methodology training course was a great success, judging by the feedback that we received from delegates.

This course focuses on providing attendees with an overview of different groundwater sampling methods, including 3 well volume purging, low flow (or "micro-purge") and passive sampling, and provides a hands-on practical introduction to the range of equipment available to perform sampling tasks.

The average overall rating for the day given by delegates using the Geological Society's CPD evaluation form was 1.1 (1 = Excellent, 5 = very poor), which is as good as it gets. We received a lot of favourable comments that reflected the hands-on nature of the day:

Geotechnica 2011 - Good Show

Waterra UK had an excellent couple of days exhibiting at this year's Geotechnica technical trade show and exhibition at The Upton Estate showground, Banbury, Oxfordshire at the beginning of July.

The show focused on innovation within the geotechnical and drilling sectors and it gave Waterra a great opportunity to discuss the key issues with customers and prospective customers alike.

This year we were delighted to showcase our new In-Situ TROLL® range of water level loggers and water quality measurement instruments. We are confident that the rugged nature of their design and construction (they are made of Titanium or Stainless Steel) will find plenty of fans in the geotech and drilling sectors where conditions are often pretty harsh.

Being part of the exhibition also gave us an opportunity to talk more about the benefits of being part of the In-Situ Inc. organisation. It was good to give some positive news about how we are going to be able to expand our product portfolio still further and enhance a range of our services. Now we have been working with the In-Situ Inc. TROLL® range of water level instruments for several months some of their key features are being very apparent to both us and our clients.

We are particularly impressed by their versatilty (vented cable and absolute pressure options are available across the range), the detailed calibration record provided to customers with each logger, and their proven ability to operate accurately over a wide temperature range - unlike many competitor models which drift significantly in response to temperature changes.

We have had some very good feedback from the CPD accredited groundwater sampling training courses that we ran at the end of March.

In purely quantitative terms the overall average score given by delegates was 1.5 where 1 = Excellent and 5 = Poor.

Qualitative feedback was very encouraging too. Here are just a couple of comments that we received;

’Very informative, broad and answered all questions fully. Given me a lot to think about in terms of QC – thank you’.

‘Very worthwhile, learned a lot about sampling methods and pleased with certificate!’

The Waterra team really enjoyed the opportunity to interact with such a dieverse group of clients from the groundwater monitoring sector. Amongst others we had representatives from the water supply industry, nuclear energy, environmental consultancy and landfill monitoring. There was an interesting interchange of ideas between delegates and, for the presenters, some challenging questions too.

We had the opportunity to show off the TROLL 9500 water quality instrument for the first time, and the delegates were very impressed with its multi sensor, low flow sampling and reporting capability.

Providing hands-on demonstrations in the training room is a powerful way of showing off different sampling techniques. However at the Beckett's Farm training centre we also have the benefit of an on-site borehole where we can demonstrate pumps and other downhole equipment in a field environment (hardly realistic as it's sited in the car park - so no mud!).

Groundwater Quality Research Project

A strong start has been made by Lindsay MacMillan, the University of Birmingham PhD student, on her research project "Groundwater Quality: Rigorous sampling and interpretation of long screen wells."

Research into technologies and techniques

Waterra, along with the Environment Agency, are providing industrial support funding to this NERC PhD case studentship sstudy because it promises to explore how advances in methodologies and equipment can enhance the accuracy and reliability of groundwater sampling from long-screen monitoring wells and boreholes

Lindsay has been busy putting in place her PhD plan and developing the literature review that underpins all research of this kind. She has also started work on a set of activities that should help to answer the fundamental question of "how can existing data acquisition and interpretation be improved".

Multilevel monitoring, in our experience, doesn't always get the attention it deserves in the industry.

It isn't as if the UK doesn't have examples of sub-surface structures that encourage a variety of groundwater flows. We also have plenty of examples of cross-contamination because of complex site conditions. Perhaps it is lack of familiarity with the equipment available?

The very first Waterra Powerpack PP1 to be sold back in 1998 has just come back into our workshops for a service and it’s still going strong – 12 years later!

Waterra UK has just been notified that the Aenigma caving expedition to explore some the deepest caves on earth in the Western Caucasus has been completed.

Waterra UK has seen quite an increase in orders recently for our TeleScoop telescopic samplers.

The feedback from clients is very interesting. Apparently Health and Safety legislation is making them reticent about sending employees scrambling down riverbanks or wading through watercourses. The need to undertake groundwater sampling is increasing as legislation (particularly the water framework directive) requires businesses to take responsibility for monitoring their own impact on groundwater.

These are some general points about the state of the market and kinds of things you are interested in:

Two thirds of respondents expect spending on groundwater equipment to remain the same this year. An impressive 15% think that it will increase.
After Value/Price, product quality was again the most important criteria when selecting a supplier.
The public sector accounts for over 50% of revenue for 20% of respondents and for between 26-50% for a further 20+% - similar to 2009.
We also have heard from you on the most frequently received journals (Brownfield Briefing), most commonly visited websites (www.Claire.co.uk) and the most popular conferences and exhibitions attended. In Ireland the most frequently visited website is www.epa.ie . In contrast the Environmental Agency websites in England, Wales and Scotland are only rarely mentioned!

Waterra are providing industrial support funding, along with the Environment Agency, for a PhD studentship on groundwater quality at the University of Birmingham.

The research will be looking specifically at the rigorous sampling and interpretation of long-screen monitoring wells and and boreholes. The objective is to evaluate innovations such as passive and low flow sampling and and develop process-based monitoring protocols.

"This is a great opportunity to improve the guidance on groundwater sampling methodologies", said Peter Dumble, MD of Waterra UK. "New techniques allow long-screen monitoring wells to provide far more accurate and reliable samples and we anticipate that the research project will help to quantify the benefits of the new approaches."

All of the results are in from this year's edition of the annual Waterra UK customer survey. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the many respondents for taking part and say how delighted we are for very positive feedback that the survey provided us.

Here are just a few of the highlights;

88% of respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with Waterra's service

Battery recycling rules - good for groundwater

New EU rules have come into force today which should help to reduce the contamination of groundwater from discarded batteries.

The UK has lagged behind other EU countries in the safe disposal of batteries with over 90% ending up in landfill sites. From now on retailers who sell more than 32kg of batteries per year will have to provide recycling bins and participate in a collection scheme. The objective is that by 2012 at least 25% of batteries will be recycled and that by 2016 the figure will be 45%.

"This is a very positive step forward because batteries contain a cocktail of hazardous chemicals and metals", said Peter Dumble, MD of Waterra UK. "If we can give the public easy ways to participate in the recycling process then I am sure they will respond. And reducing the number of batteries going into landfill will help us to protect the integrity of the country's groundwater supplies. Waterra have been recyling batteries used in-house for several years and in the last month have submitted our 2009 annual return to the Environment Agency for batteries placed on the market in 2009 - amounting to considerably less than 1 Kg in total!"

2010 will see a lot of emphasis on groundwater issues as the Water Framework Directive is rolled out. Individual companies are being given a lot more responsibility for monitoring their impact on groundwater and the penalties for contamination are becoming increasingly punitive.

Water Framework Directive - the next big challenge?

From a Waterra perspective 2010 sees the start of a major focus on the implications of the Water Framework Directive and in particular how Operator Self Monitoring (OSM) will work in practice.

World's Deepest Cave installed with leveloggers!

You may remember in a previous post ("Towards the Centre of the Earth") that Waterra UK was supporting the Aenigma caving expedition to explore some the deepest caves on earth in the Western Caucasus.

We are delighted to report that the expedition achieved its objectives and that Aenigma descended 2,150 metres into the Krubera-Voronya cave. We are even more pleased to tell you that the Leveloggers that we provided to the expedition team survived the descent. The team managed to record some fascinating data on water level fluctuations in the cave system, and have added additional units to study flooding patterns over the next year to improve the safety of further trips to deeper parts of the cave complex.

Waterra's recent groundwater equipment training course was so popular that a second day had to be laid on. Both sessions were fully booked and attracted high praise from participants.

The training courses were designed to deliver a mixture of theory and practice on groundwater sampling. The content of the day included an overview of sampling methodology accompanied by demonstrations and hands-on time with a range of sampling equipment.

This provided delegates with an essential insight into traditional, low flow and passive groundwater sampling methodologies, as well as defining the pros and cons for each one. The practical aspect of the course is very important because it gives delegates a feel for the practicality of different sampling techniques in a field setting.

Waterra had an excellent few days at this year's Geotechnica technical trade show and exhibition in Banbury at the end of August.

Overall the event was very successful with a wide range of geotechnical professionals in attendance. It was a ideal opportunity to meet up with many of our existing clients and, of course, make some new contacts.

There was a great deal of interest in Waterra's range of leveloggers. Applications for the devices included water level logging, as you might expect, as well as temperature and electrical conductivity logging, which is less common.

Towards the Centre of the Earth!

It's one of our more unusual sponsorship activities but Waterra is pleased to be supporting the "Towards the Centre of the Earth" caving expedition.

The expedition is being led by the Lithuanian club “Aenigma” and brings together an international team of experienced cavers who are going to explore the world's deepest cave systems in the Western Caucasus.

Groundwater Products Wanted! Waterra Customer Survey 2009

We deliberately design our annual customer surveys to not only get a snapshot of your opinions about our products and services but also to get actionable feedback that helps us to improve what we do.

This year we decided to ask what other products you would like Waterra to provide. The reaction was very interesting.

Firstly you provided a short list of products and product types that we can review for inclusion in our portfolio, subject to finding quality suppliers or being able to design and build ourselves. Your requests included the following along with some of our own quick responses.

Light weight easily portable pump and power supply - this is something of a holy grail in groundwater sampling! At shallow depths there are several options already including inertial pumps (manually operated), peristaltic pumps and 12V submersible pumps - both the latter need battery power. At greater depths lightweight becomes less achievable, unless pumps are dedicated. We'll keep looking!

ATEX approved dipmeters. We are looking into this issue and hope to have a solution soon. It's worth stating that the cost of maintining certification for ATEX equipment in what is a relatively small market is extraordinarily high and this has to be reflected in the pricing.

Oil skimming pumps. We already can supply a range of manual skimmers, floating skimmers and hydrophobic skimmers for removing floating oil layers from boreholes! See our remediation pages.

Peristaltic tubing for Competitor Products. We occasionally get asked for equipment to match competitor products and we shall certainly look into this. Call our sales team - and if there is a demand we will respond.

Rain gauges. We already have these! - They are part of our datalogger range and you can find them amongst our range of rainlogger and rainfall data products.

We clearly need to improve the promotion of some of our products and will respond where we can to the above suggestions. Thank you!

Secondly you indicated that you saw Waterra as an ideal supplier for these products. This is great news for us because it vindicates our view that our expert pre and post sales support is an essential part of what makes Waterra successful.

So thank you, and feel free to give us more examples of groundwater monitoring equipment that you would like us to provide.

Waterra has just completed its latest annual customer survey as part of our ongoing commitment to continual improvement. We are delighted to hear that our customers continue to rate us very highly across a range of factors.

More than 95% of you were satisfied or highly satisfied with Waterra's service and nearly 90% of you would recommend us to other people.

Cross Rail? No, Happy Cross Rail!

We are delighted to announce that Cross Rail have ordered 4 new CMT multilevel borehole systems to support the site investigation process for the exciting new proposed rail route across London.

The Continuous Multichannel Tubing (CMT) range chosen by Cross Rail allows detailed vertical sampling of complex groundwater environments. Specifically, hydraulic data is needed at several vertical intervals in relation ot the proposed tunnel route below Central London to investigate pore pressures and groundwater flow.

Waterra was chosen as the supplier of choice in this instance on the back of the successful trials of the CMT system over the last 2 years. It has proven to be the simplest and most economical multilevel system available for the collection of hydraulic data. It is currently being deployed at several locations on the Farringdon to Liverpool Street section of the Cross Rail route.

IAH Conference, Data Logger Training

Following on the IAH Conference on April 22nd (at Tullamore in Co. Offaly) Waterra conducted an afternoon workshop on groundwater monitoring with data loggers. Delegates to the course were presented with a live demonstration illustrating how to use loggers reliably and improve field accuracy.

Breakthrough Low Flow Controller - Waterra UK

Waterra has recently launched its WaSP-F1 12 volt low flow pump controller.

The WaSP-F1 low flow controller is designed to work with all types of 12v submersible pumps and is ideally suited to low flow groundwater sampling. The low flow controller reduces the speed of the pump motor, thereby minimising disturbance in the well and at he same time reduces battery power consumption and wear and tear on the pump itself. Flow rates can be reduced to below 0.5 litre / minute.

The controller has been produced by Waterra to meet EU regulatory requirements, particularly for CE certification of products - unlike many imported alternatives offered by our competitors. Peter Dumble, Waterra MD explains.

"Many of our clients had been looking for an easy to use device that could safely deliver low flow control with 12V pumps, and meet EU regulatory requirements. The WaSP F1 flow controller incorporates many safety features which protects both the equipment and the user in field conditions. It is manufactured in the UK and is fully CE marked to meet the stringent regulations we all work under in the European environment.

Thumbs Up for Groundwater Monitoring Training

Waterra's Groundwater Monitoring Training Course held on April 1st proved to be a highly successful event.

‘Nothing else to say – but an excellent course’

The course covered an overview of groundwater sampling methodologies, practical demonstrations on a variety of groundwater monitoring devices ( dip meters, 12V submersible pumps, bladder pumps and passive samplers), and a hands-on workshop where delegates had the opportunity to use all of the equipment.

‘The theory of water movement in boreholes was very useful. The level of experience and knowledge of the presenters was excellent compared to other courses provided by consultants!’

Feedback from the course (as you can see) was excellent and there were some useful suggestions about content. We will try and incorporate those ideas in the next running of the Groundwater Monitoring Training Course on September 9th 2009.

Darfur leveloggers still reporting

Although the emergency in Darfur isn't making the headlines at present the problem hasn't gone away. There are still many people trapped in difficult circumstances with poor access to both food and water.

Waterra supplied Leveloggers to Oxfam and the Tear Fund in 2007 for automatic recording of water levels in boreholes and wells in the region. Training was provided by Waterra during 2008 to help local technicians get the most from the equipment. Part of the help that we were able to provide was with the introduction of good field practice and record keeping to improve accuracy and consistency with data collection.

The people on the ground in Darfur have been able to reduce the monitoring cycles to a level that has increased the operational life of the units whilst leaving unchanged the accuracy and effectiveness of the data being recorded. Because of the difficulties of installing the equipmentin a sometimes hostile environment the opportunity to leave the equipment in situ for longer is a great practical benefit.

The people in Darfur rely on the availability of groundwater for survival. We are just pleased to have helped in the process of making sure that supply is stable.

Waterra. Boring Brum Students?

Not exactly, but boreholes were on the agenda when Peter Dumble, Waterra UK's MD, gave his annual talk to MSc Hydrogeology students on March 4th.

Waterra has a long standing invitation to address students, giving them the opportunity to see different pieces of groundwater monitoring equipment up close and demonstrate how they work.
For many of the students this is the first chance they get to see the kit in action, so it isn't surprising that attendance at the presentation and subsequent plaudits are very good.

Gold Medal Water Level Monitoring?

Not a lot of people know it but London's East End has been the home to rather a lot of Waterra's groundwater monitoring equipment over the past 18 months.

Over 40 Levelogger Gold units are installed across the site of the new Olympic Aquatics Centre providing a constant flow of data about ground and surface water levels. These units are highly corrosion resistant so they will cope with high saline levels and difficult site conditions. After all they have to stay submerged for a few more years yet!

All of Waterra's technical knowledge was required in order to define the right approach for this prestigious project. Initially 36 Levelogger Juniors were installed for recording results from a series of short term pumping tests on the site, saving hundreds of hours of staff time which wiould have been necessary to do the job manually.

The Gold Medal beckons.

Stephen's Race for Life

The event, held at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire, was one of a series of events run by Cancer Research to promote the raising of funds to help more people beat cancer.

Stephen, who raised £147 for Cancer Research and ran a personal best time of 52 mins said

“This particular event was on a course that ran around the Ragley Estate, through fields and along tracks, including rather a lot of hills!” He added “This was a personal best time for me so I’m very pleased with myself and will definitely be entering more events in the future.”

Field equipment demonstration in the Florida sunshine

Environmental professionals from all disciplines recently spent three days in Florida at the North American Environmental Field Conference and Exposition.

The conference, which featured 38 papers, 50 exhibitors and over 80 hours of interactive indoor and outdoor workshop and equipment demonstrations was attended by Waterra’s Business Development Manager, Chris Batt.

“We obtained a valuable insight into industry trends within the North American market” said Batt. “Advance information on product development and sampling techniques are likely to filter into the European market so it is important that we are there” Batt continued.

The conference was attended by geologists, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, soil scientists, chemists, biologists, environmental scientists, technicians and equipment suppliers.

We have completely redesigned our site to improve navigation and information resources for our customers. New features include the ability to search for products from anywhere in the web site, news articles and technical pages with links to training and other groundwater information sources. The structure of the new website provides us with greater flexibility and the opportunity to improve technical content. Over the coming months we will be updating and adding new information and we are confident you will notice the difference!

Earlier this year Waterra launched our first ever, on-line customer survey, putting in place a formal process to gather information about our customers, their requirements and how we serve them. Over 200 of our customers completed the confidential survey and the overwhelming response was extremely positive - our thanks to everyone who took part.

The results in the form of customer comments are outlined below with the Waterra response in italics.

What you buy and where from
Most customers buy a range of groundwater equipment and many products are most often bought from Waterra.
We will be taking actions to improve our offers so that Waterra becomes the first choice for groundwater equipment for all our customers.

Customers came up with a number of ideas for other items to be included in our product range.
We will be investigating the ideas and also plan to increase customer awareness of the full range of groundwater equipment which we have available.

Criteria used when selecting a supplier and the scores you gave Waterra
Value/Price, Pre-sales Technical Advice and Product Range are the most important criteria customers use when selecting a supplier.
Waterra scored highly against all these criteria.

Customers were less concerned about Speed of Delivery and Post Sales Support.
- but still gave Waterra high scores on these.

Several customers added additional criteria which they felt were important.
We will add these additional criteria to our surveys in the future.

Waterra Service Levels
We received a large number of positive individual comments about the service we provide.
There were a small number of customer specific issues which we will address on an individual basis. We can only respond to specific issues where customers have given permission for their identity to be revealed.

Waterra Website
Most customers only visit the Waterra website occasionally.
Our new website was launched recently including a major overhaul of layout, information and product content. We hope that this will encourage you to visit it more frequently.

Many customers would like the opportunity to purchase all products on-line and some said they would like on-line purchasing available for commodity products only.
We have built the facility to offer on-line purchasing into our new website and we plan to pilot this functionality later in the year. Watch this space!

Waterra Communications
Most customers like to receive information from Waterra on at least a quarterly basis and the preferred means of communications was email.
We have recently upgraded the service we use to deliver emails to you and we now plan to use this service in future.

Your perceptions of Waterra
Almost all customers see Waterra as a Specialist Provider of Groundwater Equipment.
This is exactly the way we would describe ourselves! Thank you!

Some customers said that Waterra’s staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

Waterra training helps the people of Darfur

George Otieno of Tearfund with (LtoR) David Wilson, Tim Davies and M-D, Peter Dumble of Waterra.

Over 2 million displaced people in Darfur currently live in crowded camps each with populations of several tens of thousands. Oxfam* and Tearfund** have both been involved with emergency relief work in Darfur since the current crisis started in 2003. To respond to the initial emergency requirement for water supply in the camps, hundreds of boreholes were drilled which have proved remarkably successful.

However, with the conflict showing no sign of ending, both Oxfam and Tearfund are investigating the longer term sustainability of groundwater supplies in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). One part of this investigation requires groundwater levels in boreholes to be monitored so that factors such as responses to rainfall recharge events, natural seasonal variations and evidence for depletion can be studied.

Following the purchase of a series of Leveloggers by Oxfam and Tearfund in 2007 Waterra stepped in and offered to provide free training to personnel involved with water resource projects in Darfur. Three workshops have been delivered in 2008 and training materials provided through trainers to others in Darfur. The courses have been tailored to provide field staff with the skills and confidence to efficiently use loggers in the field. Particular emphasis is placed on the adoption of good quality control measures which improve the accuracy and validation of logger data.

George Otieno who received training from Waterra said 'The provision of training by Waterra has enabled Oxfam and Tearfund to improve our core skills of technical staff travelling to Darfur and for us in turn to cascade this training to other team members based in Darfur.' He added “We would like to thank Waterra for this knowledge which is being put to immediate use as there has recently been some new Levelogger installations.” George is a Civil Engineer from Kenya and has over 20 years experience of aid programmes in Africa and the Middle East. George was sent by Tearfund to update his knowledge for using Leveloggers on projects he will be managing in Darfur

Sarah Andrews, Water and Sanitary Health Manager for Tearfund in Darfur has spent the last two years in Darfur with Tearfund constructing water supply systems. Professor Richard Carter of Cranfield University acts as a consultant to Oxfam in Darfur. Professor Carter is an internationally renowned expert on water related aid and development projects, particularly in Africa. He has over 35 years teaching and consultancy experience based out of Cranfield University where he has been Professor for the last 5 years. Professor Carter travelled to Darfur in July for Oxfam to provide technical training and consultancy on water supply in Darfur.

Waterra support groundwater level training course in Belfast

Waterra is supporting a one day training course on water level measurement and use of dataloggers to be held on 8th October 2008 in Belfast. The course is sponsored by the Institution of Geologists of Ireland (IGI), Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI), Quarry Products Association of Northern Ireland (QPA), DETI and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

There is a growing need to collect groundwater level data and predict impacts on water levels from a range of activities such as groundwater abstraction, mineral workings and infrastructure projects. The collection and interpretation of groundwater level data enables groundwater professionals to conceptualise and begin to understand the hydrogeological environment.

The course will emphasise the importance of water level measurements on a national and local scale, with particular reference to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive and the demands and rationale for monitoring by industry in Northern Ireland.

The course is presented by a series of experienced practitioners and consists of mixture of lectures and workshops based around real case histories. Sessions include an appreciation of different equipment for recording water levels - from manual dip meters to automatic datalogging systems. Peter Dumble from Waterra will be speaking about the importance of quality control and good field practice when deploying dataloggers and examining the accuracy of Leveloggers based on an independent collection of water levels over a 1 year period by Kevin Cullen, President of IGI.

This one day course is designed to assist all those involved in the collection and interpretation of water level data or those commissioning hydrogeological assessments for their sites. The course will be of interest to regulators responsible for the collection and reporting of national water level data sets, the licensing of water abstractions, protection of wetlands and monitoring of industrial facilities. The course will be of value to practitioners who carry out hydrogeological studies for groundwater abstractions, contaminated land assessments and quarrying/mining activities. This one day course will also be of interest to those presenting and /or assessing hydrogeological data in EIS’s and at oral hearings.
